Q: Why is NorthernTel Mobility shutting down its analog network? A: Analog networks are a first-generation cellular technology that have reached the end of their life cycle. They have been replaced by more advanced digital networks. Q: I use my analog phone often, do I have to migrate? A: As of November 16, 2008, all Canadian cellular companies, including NorthernTel Mobility, will be retiring their analog networks in a move to an all-digital network. If you want to continue subscribing to NorthernTel Mobility’s services, you must get a new digital cell phone before this date. Please also take note that U.S. analog networks are discontinued since February 2008. Your analog cell phone will not work anymore in the U.S. Q: My phone is dual mode. Am I affected? A: Yes. All devices which operate in analog mode but not on the CDMA network at 800 MHz, must be migrated to new digital device. This includes the older “dual mode” 1900 MHz digital and 800 MHZ analog phone as well as various analog-only devices such as handheld mobile, 3 Watt portable bag, and fixed in-car phones. Tri mode phones are not impacted, since they can also operate on both frequency bands of the digital CDMA network. Q: When should I replace my phone? A: U.S. analog networks have been discontinued since February, 2008. If you remain in Canada, we recommend that you upgrade your phone within the next few months so you may familiarize yourself with the improved functionalities of digital cellular service. Please remember the analog network in Canada will be shut down on November 16, 2008. Q: Do I have to pay to upgrade my phone? A: To make the transition to a digital network as smoothly as possible, NorthernTel Mobility is offering you cell phones starting at $0 .
